Better than V. A lot
This weekend in Chelmsford and Staffordshire, hundreds of thousands of people will witness the commercial behemoth that is the V Festival, where programmes will set you back a tenner or more, burgers made of sows' ears will cost you £7 and you have to purchase tokens if you want a beer. There will be huge queues for everything, and laughing is not allowed. In complete contrast, they only let 10,000 punters into the Green Man Festival. They didn't put their prices up this year and you can get a programme for nothing, too, a neat little Glastonbury-style pamphlet you wear around your neck. The festival has a beautiful setting in the 20,000 acre Glanusk Park estate in the middle of the Brecon Beacons. You will see mountains from your tent. The weather may not be perfect (it is Wales, after all) but the scenery will make up for it. And even if it rains, it won't get as muddy as Glastonbury. We promise. There's plenty of space for everyone, and if you want to play cricket or football with the kids to the side of the main stage then nobody will bat an eyelid. In fact, people will probably want to join in.
It's this family-friendly feel that makes Green Man's appeal so enduring and universal - it is the sort of festival you'd want to attend even if you didn't know who was playing - but the line-up stands up on its own as well; you'll doubtless take away a new discovery from this event - someone you hadn't intended to watch but stumbled upon and loved - with plenty to discover away from the headliners (Dead Meadow, PG Six and Vetiver are all well worth a look, and there is plenty more of interest elsewhere). That's not forgetting the bigger names like Robert Plant and Joanna Newsom further up the bill either. And although Green Man started out as a folk festival, it's been much more diverse than that of late, and this year sees plenty of acts you wouldn't necessarily consider folk - Fridge and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, for example - mingling with the likes of My Brightest Diamond and Vashti Bunyan. There is plenty here for everyone: an entire walled garden set aside for the children with drum workshops, arts and crafts and storytelling; a new Green Field with talks on environmentally-friendly living; wandering theatre; a literature tent; a retreat area and communal bonfires and DJs every evening.
You don't have to eat sows' ears either; there is an on-site smokery, fresh seafood curries, salads, gorgeous vegetarian dishes and gourmet pies. Twisted Ear is very fussy about its food but we could quite happily eat our way around this festival and probably will. You can find more information about Green Man at www.thegreenmanfestival.co.uk - and look out for our festival review next week. |

That festival looks amazing. And maybe the tank is the only way to inject a mighty meaty filling into one huge pie.
Still it looks peaceful, which is more than I can say than this. Swamped in controversy, but for me the overriding feeling is one of wounded national pride: an Australian rugby player as world champion?!! | Re: Festival Preview: Green Man, Glanusk Estate, Wales (UK), 17/08/07 - 19/08/07 Raymond Banning August 15th, 2007 - 5:51 PM

Two things of note there... firstly: In 2006, a vegetarian version was added. - Blasphemy secondly... Anthony "The Anaconda" Danson - the idiot has even got a nick name!!! | Re: Festival Preview: Green Man, Glanusk Estate, Wales (UK), 17/08/07 - 19/08/07 beck August 15th, 2007 - 7:32 PM
