I have seen a lot of dross this year (Spiderman 3, Death Proof) a lot of so-so harmless entertainment (Knocked-Up, Simpsons, Shoot Em Up) but very little in the way of really good films.

There have, however, been a few. For sheer potty-mouthed hilarity you'd struggle to beat Superbad, which took me back to the type of teen flicks that contained funny and believable dialogue (Porkys).

However, the two stand-outs have been Zodiac, which made a potentially dry, real-life unsolved mystery, sparkle with prevailing tension and unspoken foreboding in a way that only relied on the easy shock get-out of blood and guts when it absolutely had to.  It was an intelligent approach to story telling (layered, multi-charactered, patient) that's sadly lacking in much of today's cinema - or at least the bits I see.

The other, which I caught on Friday, is Sunshine.  This was so, so close to being a truly great film that it makes me sad to think of the final reel climbdown. For the first time in years we've got a sci-fi mission flick that was up there going toe-to-toe Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yep, that good.  From the visual sense - there's a brilliant use of cinematography and lighting to capture flaring in shots that's almost hallucengenic - to the production and storyline that manages to create an omnipresent feeling of doom and claustraphobic dementia. Just a shame about its conclusion as it could have been up there in the classic category.

So that's me.  What about you?

Sci-Fi isn't my thing but Sunshine is really good.

I loved Superbad and Zodiac. The latter is a really interesting story anyway but I liked the way it turned into a character piece. In a sense it wasn't really about the Zodiac killer at all but Robert Graysmith. The film was also beautifully shot and it is also always nice to see Anthony Edwards on the big screen.

Eagle vs Shark was quite good, although the character of Jarrod was quite unpleasant.

There are a lot of films I would have liked to have seen but didn't: Jindabyne, Waitress - probably others I have forgotten. That sort of thing doesn't really come to my local cinema or if it does, it's in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon.

You sound like my best mate, whose only trip to the cinema this year was to see Shrek the Third under order from his two-year old daughter.

Anyway, Graham, there's these things called nightclubs, I think you'd love them..

That's not out over here yet, but I'm keen to see anythng by the Coens.

I'm also interested in seeing There Will Be Blood, the new film from the very talented P.T Anderson.

Started?  What, with the children?

Horrible mental image of Graham's shenanigans in trap three of the ladies toilets immediately after Lady In Red has finished playing....
