Watched Sunderland for the first time for a full 90 mins yesterday. It wasn't good, Graham.
You've got some good players there, but some who are just completely disinterested. The ones who I struggle to what value they add are: Malbranque, Richardson and Anton Ferdinand - everything he (Ferdinand) did yesterday was appalling.
Jones and Cisse didn't look like much of a pairing. Considering a lot of the tactics was trying, with varying degrees of success, to pitch crosses and long balls over towards the pair of them, I often found that they were actually trying to fight for the same balls/space rather than dovetail a partnership. Cisse, too, missed about three clear cut headed chances - and when I say missed, I mean that he didn't even get them on target, which probably more disappointing than not scoring.
You should have had a penalty, mind.

not that i'm disagreeing with the performance yesterday - second half especially - and that those players didnt play well yesterday, but i'm duty bound to refer the honourable gentleman to his opening sentence - we're too jekkyl and hyde at the moment, you dont know exactly which safc you're going to get ; but those 3 players have been probably the best performers across the season as a whole, so maybe that shows how poor we were as a whole yesterday - and yes we should have had a penalty and they should have been down to ten men jones and cisse dont look like a partnership...yet - but again they looked a pretty good one last weekend, for 30 minutes against the mags etc etc - bit early to judge ; its only about their 7th game together, and they have scored 5 goals between them in that time for me our biggest problem recently has been the disruption to what had been a good back 5 of gordon, chimbonda, anton, danny collins and mccartney - they played in about 5/6 games where we only lost to villa, drew with wigan, arsenal and fulham (which looks like a good result at the moment especially at the cottage), and beat boro and the mags (the former looked like a great result until your lot got at them on saturday) - the last 5 games have been fulop, bardsley, ferdinand , nosworthy and collins, and we look a lot less balanced and settled - the quicker we get that back the better, we're more solid at the back and our full backs are a better attacking option and anyway thommo, its almost a month since you last posted on this thread and you bowl up before your next game away to.......bloody mind games already mate, you're worse than fergie!!!! dont worry, i'll give you a warts and all from the east stand, win, lose or draw (ie if the middle one we were robbed by the ref again, hit the bar 68 times in one shot and kevin nolan cut our keepers arms off at a corner and got away with it )

I should reiterate that I meant it was the first full 90 this season that I'd seen them, not ever. Anyway, I thought you had some notable performers: Nosworthy looked a class apart from Ferdinand who had an absolute mare.
I liked Collins and Reid too, the latter especially looked as though he had a bit of (non-s*xual) cuteness who might have been your best outlet as provider.
Malbranque, I thought, was frighteningly wasteful. I can usually accept the odd poor pass, or awkward control, if there's a choice that something audacious was being attempted and there's an element of risk in being executed. But non of this was on his mind, it was almost as if he was paralysed by nerves and even the most simplest of tasks looked like he was asked to scale the Eiger in his football boots.
Richardson was way too safe, he looked like the type of player who was just playing to ensure they didn't do anything wrong, ie keep everything nice and safe. You'd get a few nice bit of close ball control and shielding from oncoming players, but then he'd panic a bit, rotate and knock it square or behind, thus ondoing all his good work. Instead after the good work, he should get his head up and ping a pass to get Cisse out of the traps - lets face it, after Sunday's performance, heading isn't his strong point.
Looks like a confidence thing to me. A few wins under the belt and I suspect there'll be more belief in each other's ability.
What's happened to Diouf? I known there was the obligatory 'nightclub incident' but has he not worked his way back into Keane's good books? I heard on the radio that in his first three games up there he was one of your best players.
As for my lot, well I was actually praying we'd get beat about 4 games ago. It was one of those games were Megson would have very easily get the boot (which is what I wanted) if we'd lost. Since then, including that game, we've played four and won three.
I'll definitely be keeping my 'Sack Megson' campaign going for a while yet.

first off, you might have to hold that sack megson campaign a bit - whilst i'm about to dissect our travesty of a performance, your lot were very good - took advantage of our frailties well, very organised and strong - keep that up and you shouldnt have too many worries this season
ironically, i will trace our shower of shite to the decidion to drop ferdinand, given that 2 of the goals we presented you came from nosworthy getting outjumped by taylor (!) and collins missing the ball totally to allow elmander one on one with the keeper
your second goal was slightly lucky in the sense that the ball ricoched nicelt for cahill but he took it well, and the attack came from us losing the ball anyway, so....
and the fourth came from whitehead pissing around in his own half, losing the ball and bang: 4-1
to me its not about the amount of money on the new players when the last remnants of the championship side make such basic errors
i am looking forward to seeing the disallowed goal which would have made it 2-2 ; it looks like the kind of situation where we are not getting the decisions whereas if its at our end, the goal gets given -
we had plenty chances, and the first half was a lot more even than 3-1 suggested at HT, but we fell apart second half
lets just hope this is the bottom of the slump - where next week?
oh fucksticks

I thought, "same old story," kept a low profile fom you, changed stations and basically avoided the result. Had to go out later that evening and was staggered when I heard the final score. This recent run of form (4 wins in 5 games, and the defeat was against Liverpool) is a bit of a comfort, but I just don't like the way we play football. It's clunky and our effectiveness is a bit hit and miss. Under Allardyce, it was similar but we had a sprinkling of players (Okocha, Djorkaeff, Campo... even Diouf) who had a bit of cunning, guile and extravagance to their play - y'know the stuff that makes the game a genuinely thrilling spectacle to watch. I'm just not getting that under Megson, instead we get a team who are vey much the embodiment of him as a player: tenacious, gritty, no risk always playing the percentages. ironically, i will trace our shower of shite to the decidion to drop ferdinand, given that 2 of the goals we presented you came from nosworthy getting outjumped by taylor (!) and collins missing the ball totally to allow elmander one on one with the keeper I'm amazed you say that about Nosworthy, I thought he was one of your better players last week, and easily outshone Ferdinand - who Keane had every right to drop after last week's shambolic display. your second goal was slightly lucky in the sense that the ball ricoched nicelt for cahill but he took it well, and the attack came from us losing the ball anyway, so....

Had a listen to the phone-ins after the game, 606 really, and it was mainly Sunderland fans, it seemed most were in support of Keane, but there were a few who wanted him out. I think one of the major gripes is that he's blown a lot of money on a surfeit of strikers - I think you have something like 14 on your books - and a better manager would have had a better balance. They also raised the fact that he's still p*ssing about over signing a new contract, and if he thought anything of the club he'd have signed it by now.

Oh dear... KEANE LEAVES SUNDERLAND - REPORTS Posted 04/12/08 11:30EmailPrintSave
Roy Keane has left Sunderland, according to reports.
The Irishman is understood to have parted company with the Wearsiders following days of intense speculation about his future after a string of poor results.
There has been no official confirmation from the Stadium of Light but reports claim that Sunderland players were informed of Keane's departure at a meeting earlier this morning.
A press conference has been convened for 1pm at which Keane's departure is expected to be formally announced.
Sunderland are currently rooted in the relegation zone after winning just one of their last six matches.
More to follow...

Is this a job for Big Sam? Or could it signal the return of Reid?

WELL!
something had clearly been up, but as many people were speculating about the sack as much as they were walking, so when laqst night the rumours about meetings and announcements came out, no-one really knew what was going on
I dont think you can discount the strides we have made under keane, but I think, with a bit of time to let it settle, I am hugely disappointed at his decision to walk out
its the first serious time he has been criticised ; instead of taking it on the chin and working through it, maybe having the humilty to say 'yeah, maybe i need to do things differently', he has decided to throw in the towel
when he came it was all about the battling warrior, the guy who single handedly took manu to the 1999 CL final despite knowing he was going to be suspended
the roy keane of today would have asked to be subbed as soon as the card came out
i think his lack of experience has been shown with the bringing in of the bigger name players - which he was right to do, i still think we have a good set of players, with weaknesses like everyone else - but he hasnt been able to manage them and get the best out of them
so yeah, i'm feeling a bit flat, a bit let down, sad that the grand keane experiment hasnt proven out in the end
i hope we go for some experience now, not past it or same old, but someone with a bit of pedigree in dealing with 'name' players
hence i'm not adverse to the idea of agent allardyce, despite the obvious connotations

from an safc forum, re some reports on SSN
"Basically said that some players were complaining about a lack of man management and Keane being too distant, yet he shouted obscenities at them at half time during the Northampton game. Also not turning up for engagements etc while disciplining others for the same thing.
In other words, he'd lost the dressing room, or at least some of the players."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/sunderland/3551680/Sunderland-players-celebrate-after-Roy-Keane-resigns-Football.htmlSunderland players celebrate after Roy Keane resigns Roy Keane's shock departure as Sunderland manager sparked celebration among the players, it emerged on Thursday night. By Rob Stewart Last Updated: 10:09PM GMT 04 Dec 2008 "He ruled by fear," said one source close to the squad, who added that Keane's hardline management methods had alienated many at the relegation-threatened club. Keane is understood to have announced his departure by sending club chairman Niall Quinn a text message. Quinn made several attempts to contact Keane to try to change his mind, but his calls and texts went unanswered. However, Quinn's fears were confirmed when Keane's London-based solicitor, Michael Kennedy, faxed a statement signed by his client to the club on Thursday at lunchtime. Keane later put out a brief statement which read: "I would like to thank my staff, players, Niall Quinn and, in particular, the fans for their support during my time at Sunderland, and I would like to wish the club every success in the future." Quinn, who is considering installing Sam Allardyce as Keane's successor, had returned from a short break in Portugal to sort out his fellow Irishman's future. But Keane has not been seen at Sunderland since last Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Bolton and he maintained his distance by staying at the family home in Cheshire, from where he has been commuting to Wearside by helicopter recently.

By helicopter?!! What on earth?!
Anyway the names in the frame, as I believe it, are Sam Allardyce (former player), Phil Brown (Mackem fan, apparently) and Alan Curbishley.
I couldn't see Phil Brown leaving at the moment. Curbs and Big Sam are the best bet, with Sam favourite on account of his playing past. However, how would his stint at the Toon go down with fans. More fearfully though, I've heard Souness name mention, as is obligitory in these situations. The horror, oh, the horror.
